St. Patrick's Day

Dear Diary,

Today is Saint Patrick's Day. Most people have no idea what it means besides drinking green beer and partying. Which you never need an excuse for but people love to use this day to get totally wasted and wear green. I myself love the color green and I myself love to drink (when I am not pregnant) so I enjoy today. But I, like everyone else, had no idea what today actually means. So for those that care, today is the traditional death day of Saint Patrick. It is the official Christian feast day which symbolizes the day that Christianity came into Ireland. It also celebrates the heritage and culture of the Irish and it usually involves parades, festivals and wearing the color green or a shamrock. It is also a public holiday in Ireland.

Who is Saint Patrick? Born into a wealthy Romano-British family, he was kidnapped by Irish raiders and taken as a slave to Ireland. It is said he spent 6 years there working and during that time "found God". According to Patrick, God told him to flee to the coast, where a ship would be waiting. After he got home, he became a priest. He spent many years preaching to half of Ireland and converted thousands to God. He died on March 17th and to this day, we have St. Patty's Day!

Why the color green and the shamrock? The color green has been associated with Ireland since the 1640's. People use to wear green to support Christianity and were persecuted for it. So supporters now wear it in memory of those killed for their faith. St. Patrick is said to have used the shamrock as to describe the Holy Trinity to fellow Irishmen.

It is also the day during Lent where you are allowed to eat and drink what you want in order to celebrate this day. The restrictions are lifted only on this day for it. So enjoy today, and remember how one man was able to bring so many people over to Christianity and now when someone ask you if you know what today means, you can clearly answer them Yes!

Happy Saint Patrick's Day from Mighty Mouse and me. We are officially 20 weeks today and he is as long as a carrot and as fat as a mango!

Love, Me
